Niloufar Noorbakhsh
Niloufar Nourbakhsh (b.1992) is an Iranian composer and pianist based in New York City. She is renowned for her contemporary classical compositions spanning various genres including piano, orchestra, chamber groups, voice, electronics, and mixed media. She embarked on her musical journey at the Sarang Institute of Music in Karaj, Iran, where she began her piano studies. At the age of fourteen, Nourbakhsh joined the studio of Arash Abbasi, a composer and pianist at Tehran University, further honing her skills. Her talent was recognized early on when she clinched the 2nd prize in Iran’s national piano biennale competition at just fifteen, with a performance at Roudaki Hall.
Continuing her academic pursuits, Nourbakhsh completed a year of study in music and mathematics at the University of Oxford before relocating to the United States for her bachelor’s degree. She graduated with a B.A. from Goucher College in 2014.
Currently based in New York City, Nourbakhsh is pursuing her doctoral studies in composition at Stony Brook University. She shares her expertise by teaching piano at the Brooklyn Music School and guiding composition students at the New York Philharmonic Young Composers program as a Teaching Artist Associate.
Additionally, Nourbakhsh is the founder of the Iranian Female Composers Association, advocating for the recognition and promotion of female composers in the music industry.
